Changing Perceptions: Exploring "Bab' Aziz: The Prince Who Contemplated His Soul"

In a world often fraught with misunderstandings and misconceptions about Islam, filmmaker Nacer Khemir set out on a poignant journey to challenge these preconceptions and offer audiences a glimpse into the richness and depth of Sufi spirituality. Through his visually captivating and spiritually profound film, "Bab' Aziz: The Prince Who Contemplated His Soul," Khemir masterfully weaves together storytelling, poetry, and breathtaking cinematography to convey the essence of Sufism and its universal message of love, tolerance, and spiritual awakening.

A Poetic Journey

At its core, "Bab' Aziz" is a film about the journey of the soul. Set against the backdrop of the vast desert landscape, the movie follows the titular character, Bab' Aziz, an elderly dervish, and his young granddaughter Ishtar, as they embark on a pilgrimage to a gathering of Sufi mystics known as the "Great Sufi Conference." Along the way, they encounter a diverse array of characters, each with their own stories and wisdom to share. Through poetic storytelling and mesmerizing visuals, Khemir invites viewers to embark on a journey of self-discovery and spiritual enlightenment, transcending cultural and religious boundaries to connect with the universal truths that unite us all.

Challenging Misconceptions

One of the central themes of "Bab' Aziz" is the exploration of Sufism as a path of love and compassion. In contrast to the often sensationalized portrayals of Islam in mainstream media, Khemir presents a vision of Islam rooted in peace, tolerance, and the pursuit of inner truth. Through the teachings of Sufi masters and the timeless wisdom found in Sufi poetry, the film challenges common misconceptions about Islam and offers a more nuanced understanding of the faith. As Bab' Aziz himself reflects, "The only faith that triumphs is the faith that is shared."

Quotes and Poems

Within the film, there are several poignant quotes and poems that capture the essence of Sufi spirituality and offer profound insights into the human condition. One such quote, attributed to the Sufi poet Rumi, speaks to the transformative power of love: "Love is the ark appointed for the righteous, which annuls the danger and provides a way of escape." Another poem, recited by Bab' Aziz as he contemplates the mysteries of existence, reflects on the ephemeral nature of life and the eternal quest for truth:

"In this world, there are seekers, there are lovers, There are those who remain, and those who vanish like shadows. They all pass away, leaving behind only footprints in the sand, But the quest for truth remains eternal, Guiding us on our journey through the desert of the soul."

Painting

In my painting I wanted to portray the story of the Prince who follows a stray horse and is lost to his subjects until they find him sitting silently before a spring gazing at his reflection in cotnemplation.

Then to the left we have the granddaughter Ishtar holding onto Baba Aziz, their relationship is expreses by a deep sense of love and compassion. One nice moment epitomises this, when Ishtar feels lost Baba Aziz comforts her by saying "He who has faith will never get lost, my little angle. He who is at peace won't lose his way".
Then further to the left there is Baba Aziz taking his samadhi, or as he describes it, his marriage with eternity. I tried to express this by blending the figure in with the marbling underneath. He is connected to a stem which expresses his kundalini rising higher until it blossoms into a colourful lotus higher up. This expresses his complete moksha by which he achieves the full enlightenment and rises to the heavens.
